Realism
Realism looked at the actualities of life. Realism artists tried to represent subject matter truthfully. Real and typical people and ordinary events in everyday life were common in realism paintings.
The Gleaners was painted by Jean-Francois Millet in 1857. This painting shows peasants working very hard. This ordinary and necessary work for their survival is obviously hard on their physical bodies.
